It is so hard to believe that a few weeks ago I was in LA having the time of my life at Blogfest. July was such a busy month with lots of changes and exciting things happening. Blogfest is one of them, it’s easily a HIGHLIGHT of my year. This was my 3rd year attending, and it definitely did not disappoint.
My most favorite part about Blogfest is the people. I think back to when I went the first year and knew no one. I honestly didn’t even know what I was getting myself into, but I had the TIME of my life. Going the first year was one of the best decisions I have made. My experiences at Blogfest have had a huge impact on my life and helped shape the last few years of my life through opportunities as well as things learned. My Style Suite along with Gossip & Glamor and Westfield Southcenter are hosting an amazing style series this month called Style Boss. The series is made up of 3 different sessions – Boss Style, Street Style and Fab in 15. The first event took place this last Tuesday and I had the pleasure of attending. While I am not a ‘fashion blogger’, I do love fashion and keeping up on the latest trends. Whether I am in workout clothes or regular clothes, I want to look good!
Interested in attending an event in the series? Find out how at the bottom of this post.
The Style Boss Event
Each session features a variety of styles that are hand picked by local fashion bloggers. The first session in the series, Boss Style, featured styles appropriate for the work place. Julianna of Blush & Camo, Haley of Me and Mr. Jones, and Lisa of Story of My Dress were the panelists and all contributed different ‘looks’. There was a mix of business and casual, perfect #girlboss attire! All the outfits were great for a day at work or a conference, and some could even be turned into a evening outfit for happy hour or a date. My favorites are below.
It’s all in the Details
There was much more to this event then just the fashionable styles. So many fun thoughtful details that make it an all around fun night. First of all, light appetizers and drinks were served. The food for this event provided by Duke’s and it was delicious! I loved the pesto salmon.
They also had a ‘candy bar’ by Lolli & Pop, a new candy store in Westfield Southcenter. They had chocolate covered nuts and gummy bears. Their gummy bears were the best I’ve ever had. I use gummy bears as fuel sometimes on long training runs. Now I know where to get the good ones! They just launched two new flavors, rosé and champagne, which they will have at all three Style Boss events.
Gene Juarez had stylists at the event who could touch up your hair and/or make up. They curled my hair and it was the finishing touch I needed to feel glam for the evening.
Each attendee also received a cute swag bag full of goodies.
Who should attend?
Anyone! These events are perfect for someone who wants to learn about the current fashions and have a fun night out. I had a great time and highly recommend you attend an upcoming event if you can fit it into your schedule. It’s a great way to socialize with friends or meet new people. Gossip & Glamour knows how to throw a really fun event. You won’t want to miss these!

Today I’m joining Tiffany, Debbie, Natalie and Truitt Family Foods in sharing my Top 10 Takeaways from BlogFest 2015. After a crammed 4 days of sweat and learning, I came home with so much info and knowledge. I recapped some other aspects of the conference previously in my posts about how Blogfest/IDEA World helped me get inspired, connect with others and transform myself and my business. Below are my top 10 takeaways that are a mix of business/blog and fitness tips, so there’s a little something for everyone. 🙂
1) Fitness is more than sweat
If you are in the fitness industry, you may already understand this. Fitness goes so much deeper than sweating and looking good aesthetically. Most of us may start for that reason, but if you stick with it, it turns into so much more. It develops character, it makes you stronger mentally, it teaches you important lessons, it reduces stress, it helps you run a business better. Most of all, it is a wonderful unifier that brings so many people together. Fitness has changed my life and I love it for so many reasons. At Blogfest not only was I reminded of that, I was also surrounded by a lot of other people who also love fitness for reasons more than sweat.
2) Social media posts = quality over quantity
Don’t post on social media just to post on social media, make sure there is a purpose behind it. Post quality pictures & make sure there is a message with what you are posting. You could be posting a daily check in – that’s great because that has purpose. It could be an inspirational quote or some sort of tutorial/recipe/how-to. Whatever it is, make sure it has purpose and people get something from it, it’s better to post nothing or post less than to post mindless updates just to have a presence. Kasey, aka Powercakes, also mentioned that Instagram is like match.com for friends. Haha! How freaking true is that? I have so many #fitfriends from Insta!
3) Blog friends are the best friends
I mean really… they are! For example, look at my BFF Katie, we met thru blogging and coming to Blogfest last year! Meeting people and making new friendships is definitely one of the highlights of the conference. Because of this I feel that attending a conference, like Blogfest, once a year is super important because you get to met people that you may end up collaborating with later on, or they could turn out to be one of your greatest friends.
4) Write more evergreen posts
What does evergreen mean? It’s a blog/business term that refers to the life of content. Evergreen posts/content will be relevant for quite some time, if not indefinitely. For example, you could write a post about an awesome weekend and list everything you do (life-casting) OR you could share ‘5 Must Try Summer Activities’ and share details/ pics of your weekend through out that post.
As a blogger or any sort of content creator, you want content that is gonna work for you over time. A week from now, this last weekend isn’t gonna matter to anyone anymore, so you couldn’t share or reuse that post which means more work for you. 🙁 Think “less ‘life-casting’ and more evergreen” a.k.a. “how can I make this relevant and give tips/takeaways to my readers?”
5) SEO – it’s annoying but important
I’m just being honest when I say it is annoying. I haven’t met anyone that thinks SEO (search engine optimization) is fun. It’s not THAT bad, but its complicated enough to be something most of us with websites or blogs don’t want to deal with or worry about, myself included. Well, guess what? The positive impact of SEO has so much potential, we should deal with it.
Because it effects how you show up in the search engine results, it can majorly impact how many people can find the content you are working so hard to create! I have made the pledge to dive into SEO and share with you what I learn along the way. For now, at the very least, you should install the FREE WordPress plug-in “Yoast SEO”.
6) Blogging trends change very quickly
This seems to be true for anything based online, and it is especially true for blogs. Just between last year and this year the difference between trends and what is working well and types of monetization is cray! You can no longer evaluate the success of a blog on page views alone, there are many other factors that go into it. Engagement, how many subscribers you have, etc. Be ready to change up your blogging and social media strategies because the best practices are constantly evolving.
7) Be You!
This seems obvious, but it was mentioned multiple times during Blogfest and it is totally worth mentioning here. It can be tempting, especially online, to try to present things in a way that makes you look really good. But guess what? No one is perfect! People can see right through that kinda stuff.
People don’t want someone who is fake or perfect, they just want you to be you. That being said, you aren’t gonna be everyone’s cup of tea and that is okay! We will never be able to make everyone happy, so instead of focusing on that, focus on being authentic and true to you. As Natalie Jill said “the moment I stopped pretending [to be someone I am not] is the moment I started living”. Share your story & be real, it’s much more attractive than fake.
8) Eat the right amount of protein at the right time
Yep, it’s true. I could write a whole post on this, and I probably will, but for now I will keep it short.
Protein is important because it is what our muscles are made of. We need protein for muscle synthesis (building muscle). Protein is very important, but the amount we eat at a time is important too. 20-30g of protein is the maximum amount of protein our body can use at once for muscle synthesis. So if you eat 40g of protein in one meal, 10g of that protein doesn’t make a difference because your body can’t absorb the extra.
9) Let’s make fitness accessible
When Gabby Reece spoke, she said “people who love to go hard [hard core exercise] already know how to get it done, it’s the women juggling everything that need help”.
There are the fitness freaks who always want a harder workout or a more intense version of the exercise, and there is a time and place for that, but what about the people who just need to fit in exercise? This was echoed in another session I was in later in the weekend. The thing is, anyone can make an exercise harder or more intense, but not everyone can bring it back to the basics or show modifications for those that need them. When you have advanced in fitness, adding intensity is great, but when you are new or trying to get back in the game, it can be really intimidating.
I am going to make a point to be better about this in my workout videos and whatever I mention on here.
10) I want to make more videos
This isn’t a specific take away from a presentation, it is just something that I realized while I was at Blogfest. I was on Periscope a few times (FOLLOW ME! @sweetblondefit) and made a few other videos while I was there, and I love it! It can be time consuming, but I feel like I can connect well with people via video. I have fun with it so I want to post more videos here on my blog. In a presentation at Blogfest it was mentioned that we should focus on what we LOVE doing, so I will give more attention to video 🙂
This post is part of the #betruBlogFest link up hosted by these 3 wonderful ladies. Be sure to check out the link up to see the rest of the posts and other blogger’s takeaways.
I hope you all have a great weekend! I’m gonna be trying to stay cool – it’s gonna be a scorcher. I will see you all back on Monday to tell you about my very first hot yoga experience and share some tips for newbies!
Inspire. Connect. Transform. That was the tagline/theme of the IDEA World Fitness Conference this year, and it was so appropriate because all of those things took place at the conference. I was totally inspired, I got to connect with other bloggers and fitness pros and I was also transformed in various different ways. It is hard to believe that it has been 2 weeks since I was down in Los Angeles sweating my booty off. If you didn’t catch my other posts you can read them HERE and HERE.
1) We spent a lot of time over the 4 days working out! My after some crazy awesome workouts, I was pretty sore. There were so many celebrity trainers in the house like Jillian Micheals, Jen Winderstrom, Gabby Reece, Beto Perez… and the list goes on!
2) I also got a chance to try a BRAND new workout called ‘Flexline’ which is created by the same people that created ‘Totally Drenched’ (that is Brittany Spears favorite workout!) It was killer! It’s the perfect combo of strength training and cardio. This class will for sure get you shredded! Be on the lookout for a whole entire post about Flexline in the future 🙂
3) I am now the proud owner of a TRX strap! Don’t worry, TRX isn’t scary! It’s actually an awesome tool that makes body weight workouts much more effective. It does wonders for your core muscles. I cannot wait to dive in to TRX training!
4) I got tons of new workout ideas and inspiration! They are definitely gonna transform workout Wednesdays. One of my fav sessions was all about partner workouts.
5) Fitness is not only a physical transformation, it’s also a mental one. I was reminded of that by Dr. Jason Karp in one of the sessions –
“[in fitness] you are faced with a decision: either to back off because of the discomfort, or push thru the discomfort and discover what is on the other side”
So very true! You have 2 choices and neither one is wrong, it’s to you to make that decision. I can say it feels so scary to push thru that barrier of discomfort, but once you find what is on the other side, it is so empowering!
1) I will soon be an NASM CPT! I have finally taken the leap and signed up for the certified personal trainer (CPT) course thru NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine). I have already gotten started and its gonna be a lot of work, but it’s gonna be so worth it. I am so pumped that I will have the credentials to train others effectively and help others on their fitness journey!
2) While at the conference, I was reminded through various experiences of how much better something can be when you experience it with friends. Not only is it awesome to share the activity with others, it’s also great accountability. If your friends are gonna be there, you are more likely to show up!
So…since I am doing all these half marathon training runs I thought, why not share the love and start a free running group?! It’s something I have thought about doing and wanted to do, but always put it on the back burner. NO MORE! Here’s to more runs with friends. P.S. are you in the Seattle area? Do you run? Contact me!
3) I also had an idea to start an outdoor bootcamp for month of August here in Seattle. Considering August is in like 2 days I need to hurry up with this. Haha! As much as it sounds like fun and I want it to happen, it may have to be a Fall 2015 or even a 2016 project. Unfortunately you can’t just go plop down at the park and workout. There are so many different aspects of it that I need to get set up before I start it. I have so many other things on my plate at the moment I don’t know how feasible this is. Maybe I will surprise myself 🙂 I’ll keep you updated!
4) Sweetblondesfitlife.com will have a new look! Yep, I am going to change up the layout of my blog. It needs a few improvements. There isn’t anything glaringly wrong with it, but I do want my older posts to be easier for you to find.
5) I have even more business/blogging tips and take aways that will be up on tomorrow’s post (Friday) with my top 10 take aways from Blogfest. Be sure to subscribe or check back for that!
This post was meant for yesterday, but I had a myriad of technical issues that made it impossible. After fighting with my computer and getting some tech help, here we are. Enjoy!
Today I have spent a lot of time reflecting, feeling grateful, and foam rolling. 😀 I had a TON of things on my to-do list today, but I ended up giving myself permission to not finish everything and spend some time missing my new friends from this weekend and using this inspiration to make plans for the future. This last weekend was amazing in more ways than I could imagine. I had the privilege of getting to attend the second annual Blogfest that is part of the IDEA World Fitness Conference.
What does that mean? It means I am very sore. Haha. It also means I got to spend 4 days learning about health and fitness, working out with some of the BEST people in the business and I spent 2 of those 4 days with like minded bloggers and influencers. The days were so jammed packed, 4 days felt like 8. Today, while I feel tired and am trying to recover, I also feel extremely energized, inspired and ready to take myself and my business to the next level.
The theme or tagline of the IDEA conference this year was “Inspire, Connect, Transform”. That is exactly what these last 4 days were all about. I am going to cover each of these topics in a separate blog posts to somewhat recap the weekend. Today I want to introduce you to 6 individuals who really inspired me this weekend.
Through out the 4 days of the conference I was motivated, encouraged, energized, and moved. At times this energy was so high and my heart was so full that I teared up. There was inspiration around every corner.
Blogfest is made possible by the amazing ladies of Sweat Pink, Jaime & Alyse. They started this amazing community and get a lot of us bloggers together each year at Blogfest which is part of the IDEA conference. This second year of Blogfest was incredible. I am so incredibly thankful for and inspired by these women.
I went from not really knowing who they were last year and kind of saying “hi” (I wasn’t part of Sweat Pink yet), to getting to know them over dinner this year. As a fellow entrepreneur, I see them as role models, but also as friends. They are amazing women who have accomplished so much. I admire them and am so inspired by them because of all the hard work they have put in to get to where they are today. I am so thankful for them and the leaders that they are. They have become role-models and have inspired me to keep working hard and never give up. I look forward to spending more time with these women in the future.
After Blogfest kicked off in the morning, we headed to the opening ceremony. The tears started when Anthony Robles shared his story. He was given the inspiration award and it didn’t take us long to realize why. He was born with one leg, and when he was 14, he fell in love with wrestling. Very few people believed in him, but his mom always told him, “don’t be ashamed God made you that way for a reason”. As you can see below, he went on to become a 3 time All-American and was the 2011 NCAA Division 1 National Champion! His story was incredibly inspirational and reminded me why I love fitness so much. Fitness shows people their true potential, it also pushes us to defy the odds and see what is possible. Not only is fitness inspiring, but it pushes us to be better. I will never forget this quote from Anthony’s speech: “Through blood, sweat and tears, I am unstoppable”. #TRUTH!
Later in the day we heard from Natalie Jill and ways to build our blogs and businesses with Pinterest. Not only is Natalie a fitness professional, she also teaches people how to build their brand and business. Besides the awesome tips she shared with us, she also shared her amazing story. She hit her rock bottom after getting a divorce. She created a vision board and started taking pictures on smart phone to share her journey. Those pictures eventually became part of a PDF she sold, which launched her whole business. Some of my favorite takeaways were, “if you have a smart phone, you can start a business” and “you create your opportunities, there are no short cuts to cheat the system”. Natalie left me feeling inspired in my business and in my life.
The next day we had our keynote speaker Gabby Reeceshare her story and her new workout with us. I wasn’t all that familiar with who Gabby was before the conference but now I understand why so many people love her and what she is doing. She talked about not training for a specific event but training for life. We are in it for the long run, it doesn’t always have to be a hardcore workout, it needs to become something you weave into your everyday life. We need to find a way to help women (and men) “get it done”. While she isn’t exclusively talking to women, she focuses on them because exercise and taking care of yourself seems to be the first thing to go when life gets stressful or tough. (Can I get an amen?!)
She shared some of her struggles she had as an athlete and she said, “you will never regret working as hard as you can as long as you have fun”. This applies to athleticism as well as business. This reconfirmed some of the hard decisions I have had to make over the last year. Now, not only am I working hard but I am also having fun 🙂After her inspirational talk, we got to try her new workout, HIGHX. Let me tell you, the workout was kick-butt! So much fun and so much sweat. Gabby not only inspired me to continue sharing fitness with the world, but she also reminded me that you have to do the best you can and be true to you. People may not approve and there may be haters, but don’t quiet your talents because of what other people think.
Since Blogfest is part of the IDEA conference, we also get access to 2 days of fitness/nutrition sessions of our choosing. On Saturday I took a class withKrista Popowych. I was super excited because 1) it was a class about partner workouts and 2) because she won the IDEA fitness instructor of the year award in 2014. I remember seeing her up on stage last year thinking “I would love to meet her”. After taking this class with her, I can see why she won the award. She is a wonderful instructor, she really wanted us to learn. She inspired me to become a better fitness instructor myself. I want to help people, and I will be able to do that more effectively by becoming a better instructor and teaching more classes.
Blogfest and IDEA World not only left me inspired in fitness, it also inspired my business, reminded me why I started, refreshed my passion for helping others and also gave me a lot of new inspired friendships. On Friday, I will share with you who I got to CONNECT with this year.
I will see you all tomorrow for Workout Wednesday!
