How I Make Fitness Fun and Fashionable

Fitness is not always fun, you don’t always feel like doing it. Even the biggest fitness fanatic has days that they don’t feel like working out or eating right. I have learned a lot over the past few years about ways to keep fitness fresh & fun, even on the days we don’t feel like sweating. I may be a fitness freak now, but I haven’t always loved fitness. Check out these proven tips and tricks I am sharing with you. 

Try something new

This gets mentioned a lot, but doesn’t get enough credit. Try a new workout or a new group fitness class. You could also try working out at a different time of day.  Change it up and keep things interesting. I have had a ton of fun trying new workout classes at studios around where I live. I have found a few workouts I just can’t get enough of. 

Find something that works for you

Don’t pay attention to what everyone else is doing. What works for you, may not work for someone else and vice versa. Just because tons of people rave about cross fit or running doesn’t mean it’s the workout you are gonna love & that is okay!!  This is why trying new things is so important. This is also why there is no perfect workout for everyone. There is nothing wrong with walking, barre, or pilates. Find what gets you excited to workout and do that!  

Get some cute workout clothes

If you like the way you feel when you workout, you will workout harder! It’s seriously true. I didn’t used to believe it, but then I tried it. Trust me, working out in cute clothes is a confidence booster, makes working out more fun and brings more sweat.

“Just 5 minutes”

I use this on the days I’m really not feelin’ it. I just tell myself, “just 5 minutes”. Basically, I workout for 5 minutes and evaluate how I am feeling after that. If you are not feelin’ it, then I take the day off. Can you guess what usually happens? I keep going!! Once the workout is over, I’m always glad I did it.
Getting started can be the hardest part. So tell yourself “five minutes” and see how you feel after that.IMG_9388

#Blogfest this week + meet my blogfest buddy!

This week I have a short week because I am heading down to LA to go to Blogfest! I went last year and had a total blast. Not only did I learn a ton about how to be a better blogger, I also learned tons about health & fitness since this is part of the IDEA world conference, the biggest fitness conference of the whole year. 

There is ALWAYS tons of awesome stuff going on. Since we are bloggers, we tend to go crazy on social media… SO, if you want to see all the action as it is happening, follow me!!

I am so excited to be going again this year. I can’t wait to see the Sweat Pink girls and all my friends from last year. Unfortunately Katie isn’t able to go this year and I will miss her terribly.  Conferences like this not only help me improve my blog and business, but they also allow me to meet new people, so it is important to me to make it to at least one conference like this a year. 

Quick PRO TIP – if you are going, be sure to check out the expo planner. I wish I knew about this last year!! The expo is HUGE and can be overwhelming. This planner allows you to view a list of exhibitors in the expo and select which ones you want to visit. You don’t want to miss out on speaking with a brand because you couldn’t find the booth. Sometimes brands will have expo specials too so it’s a great time to get deals on fitness products. Check out the planner HERE.

The countdown is on!! I leave in two days and I have a lot of work to get done before I leave to meet some deadlines. However, on the packing side things are looking good! That is awesome considering that’s what I usually procrastinate on the most.

     I can’t wait to try out the Fitness Icon Workout — HIGHX™ by Gabrielle Reece!I’m also excited to listen to the presentation by Jessica Matthews on The Future of Blogging. Overall I just want to soak in all of that blogging knowledge from the experts, take part in some fun exercise sessions & most importantly network with my fellow bloggers!
  3. What is your favorite blog you follow and why? 
    MomsLA is my favorite blog. They cover such a wide range of topics for moms who live in Los Angeles. Also when I first started my blog, I reached out Sarah (co-founder of MomsLA) for advice. Her encouragement inspired me to start Real Mom of SFV.

     

  4. Who is the most inspirational person in your life and why? 
    My grandmother! She is 91 years “young,” lives in Hawaii & is very active in her community. I think it’s her generosity of spirit that keeps her motivated & happy. 
  5. What type of workout could you not live without? 
    I’m addicted to the spin class at Beatbike LA & I also love TRX!
  6. If you could go back to school, what area of study would you focus on?
     Honestly I can’t imagine going back to school! At one time I did think about getting my MBA, but that was a long time ago. If I could take some classes, it would be in advertising (I blame it on Mad Men, lol!) However what I love about attending blogger conferences is that I can always learn something new from veteran bloggers. As a newbie, these conferences energize & inspire me!

Lower Body Circuit [Workout Wednesday]

Happy hump day!! It’s Workout Wednesday again already and today I have a lower body circuit for you. These are some of my MOST favorite lower body exercises, and they require ZERO equipment. Thes were the best because you can do them anywhere.

In fact, this workout I filmed while in Hawaii, you may notice the tropical background 🙂 You can take this circuit anywhere from a corner in the gym, to your living room, to the beach on vacation. 

What do I need: a timer & a flat area to workout 

The workout: 

Repeat this circuit 3 times
do each move for 45 seconds to 1 minute depending on fitness level 

  • Plié jump squats 
  • Plié squats 
  • Jump lunges 
  • Backwards lunge (alternating legs) 
  • Bowlers lunge (alternating legs) 
  • Jump squats 

If you do each move for a minute, this circuit will only take you 18 minutes. You will get a little cardio along with muscle toning. Do this workout 3 times this week and your legs will be ready for shorts in no time! You can use this workout alone or to compliment other exercise. 

I demo/explain the exercises in the video below. Try this workout with me, the only bad workout is the one you didn’t do!

Seriously, how beautiful is this background?! I wish I could film here ALL the time. I miss Hawaii.

In it for the Long Run….

Yesterday marked the final day of my peak week for half marathon training. I ran the longest I have ever run in my life: 10 miles. At the beginning of training when I looked over the plan I thought “OMG 10 miles?!” I dreaded the thought. I worked my way thru the training plan and made to 10 miles yesterday…

I survived the run(thank God). Some things happened on the run that made it interesting, but I made it and I feel ready for 13.1 miles this coming Sunday. 

  1. my phone died at the end of my run…I was at 8.5 miles and then BAM my phone just turned off 😐 it was a solitary final 1.5 miles with no music. Thankful I know roughly where the mileage marks are so I was able to finish and know I ran the full 10 miles – this happening made me feel like I needed a running watch, that may be my next purchase. 
  2. I finally reached over 200 miles on my running app (woohoo!!) I only use this when I run, not when I walk or do any other exercise so these are all running miles. I never thought I’d reach 200 and here I am 😀
  3. It was a beautiful fall afternoon. I loved it – perfect running weather. I need to check the forecast for next weekend, but I hope it is similar because it was awesome.  The shoes passed the test, I think. They were really comfy. I’m still slower bc of my hip but it’s getting improved thankfully.
  4. I did something everyone says not to do – I tried new things the week before the race. I experimented with GU Gel and took my new running shoes out for a spin. I had to get new shoes, the Nike’s I was wearing are awesome for shorter runs, but as I was getting into the longer distances, I needed something for the “long run”. I got a pair of Brooks Ghost 7s. They seemed okay yesterday, I am going to try them tomorrow too and see if they can really win me over.

  5. I took the GU gel with me on the run intending to use it only if I felt I needed it. Well, I ended up eating the gel – the taste was interesting, not horrible, just interesting. I was worried it was gonna make my mouth all slimy and it didn’t thankfully. It did help me power thru the end of my run but I’m gonna have to find something that isn’t gel. My peeps on Instagram suggested blocks and some other products. I am going to look into that because I want to have something for the race just in case I need it. I am not a huge fan of the ingredients in some of the products, so once I make up my mind I’ll be sure to let you know what I decide.

SO – my “peak week” of half marathon training is over, and this week I get to taper off to the actual race. Tomorrow is 4 miles, then 3 miles, 2 miles, 2 rest days and then the race on Sunday! Right now I am feeling confident, I’m sure the nerves will build as the week goes on.

BlogFest [Day 2] – sleep, bootcamp, Fire & Ice!

The second day of BlogFest was supposed to start early, but I overslept. 😐  I missed the morning bootcamp, which I was disappointed about, but I quickly forgave myself, threw my stuff together and got on my way to start the day. I knew that if I had overslept, it was because my body needed it.IMG_7156

The morning was going to be jammed packed with awesome-ness, check out this line up!
Our first speaker that day was Cassey from Blogilates. Many of you know her from her youtube videos and she also has a blog. It was so great to hear from someone so well known in the online fitness world. She was not only beautiful but very knowledgable. I knew she had a huge following, but I was not  familiar with her products and the way that she monetizes her business. I got a lot of great tips from her.  And how cute is her OUTFIT?!?

Right after hearing from Cassey, we had a little Pilates session and then Jillian Michaels was up! DSC01047OMG was it cool to meet her in person!!! I mean seriously, talk about surreal. Her at home workout DVD (I’m pretty sure it was 30 day shred) was the FIRST at home workout I ever did! That was like 5 years ago. Going from only seeing her on DVD to being in the same room as her was like hello, someone pinch me!

I know a lot of people see Jillian as this hardcore, scary trainer. While she does have the no B.S. side to her, she also has a very warm and down to earth side to her as well. She shared such an awesome message with us, and I loved every bit of it. I didnt want it to be over! She talked to us as her colleagues as we are all in the health and fitness industry, shared her struggles and gave us lots of advice. I took so much away from what she shared and while I already admired her, I admire her that much more. She has such a wonderful message to share & is not what others portray her to be at times. I loved her energy, her honesty and all the spunk that she shared with us!

By this time it was 1030 in the morning and I had already had my mind blown multiple times and got a short workout in. That is my kinda day!!
So after a quick coffee break, we were back at it learning about the business side of blogging. Katie knew I had overslept and asked me if I wanted to do a bootcamp workout with her at lunch. I wash’t feeling like myself since the only workout I had done all day was a little bit of Pilates, so I was like “heck yes!” — little did I know that this bootcamp was with the one and only Kasey from Powercakes! I am so glad that Katie told me about this workout and invited me. It was an awesome way to spend lunch.

The bootcamp was held at a park about a mile away from the convention center. California weather is so beautiful that it was great to get outside as almost all the other events were inside. This was my first bootcamp workout and I LOVED it. It inspired me to hold bootcamps in Seattle when the weather permits. Wouldn’t that be fun!? There is something about taking your workout outside that makes it more fun and the time goes by faster. The California sun is HOT, and since we were not close to the beach, we didn’t have any ocean air to cool us off, but thankfully there was shade at the park.

Kasey had us partner up with another person and then had us rotate through the different stations. My partner Melissa was a California native and USC student getting her MSW! OMG girl after my own heart!! (One of my college degrees is in Sociology, random I know) *Go Trojans!* I was so thankful we were able to motivate each other and push thru some of tougher stations. Our booties were feelin’ it!
My fav part of the workout was the ab partner workouts that we did at the end. I felt so much better after this workout and was really thankful that Katie invited me. I made new #fitfriends and had a blast.

We walked back over to the conference center and got to meet the wonderfully awesome Shauna Harrison and learn about the new Under Amour #iwillwhatiwant campaign for women. Talk about a powerhouse campaign! I had seen some of the publicity, but hearing Shauna’s story was powerful. I connected so much with her because she has a background in sociology, latin american studies and Spanish too! Arriba las mujeres! 🙂 She finds her passion in fitness and has always pursued that on the side, but now is doing it full time – she even has a PhD!  We got to workout with Shauna on Saturday morning…stay tuned for my post about the kick-butt workout!

Later we heard inspiring stories from other bloggers and then we had our BlogFest party! I couldn’t believe it was already over! There were still 2 days left, but it wasn’t official “BlogFest” anymore.

They had light food and drinks at the party, but unfortunately it wasn’t anything that Katie or I could eat. We spent time networking with some more people, and then headed out to try to find a place for dinner. We were starved!IMG_6630

We ended up finding the COOLEST place to have dinner! Fire & Ice Grill.  Seriously OMG – it was like Mongolian Grill on steroids! They had all different kinds of things your could add, from Asian inspired to Mexican. You could go back as many times as you wanted, and they even had burgers… like woah!

Katie and I are both anal about what is put on our food, sauces etc. We were so lucky that Dillion was the guy who cooked our food! He totally understood and was more than accommodating. I even asked him if we could take a #selfie – haha!
