#AwareWithPink [Friday Five]

Happy Fri-YAY! Today in partnership with Sweat Pink & Aftershokz, I am sharing with you the five things that make me feel empowered!

1. Good Tunes

There is nothing like some good tunes to get you pumped up for a workout. My top 3 songs right now are: Gold – Kiiara, 679 – Fetty Wap & Remy Boyz, Let Me Love You – Justin Bieber & DJ Snake. Of course I LOVE to listen to these on my AfterShokz Trekz Titanium headphones! I especially love them on a run, because it allows me to be aware of my surroundings while running 🙂 img_7230

2. Giving Back

Nothing is more empowering than giving back to your community, especially if it’s a cause that’s close to your heart. Different ways I do this is either by running a race that supports a charity that I am passionate about, volunteering for a non-profit organization like Union Gospel Mission. I encourage you to find something in your community that speaks to your heart and get involved!

3. Self Care

Self care is one of the best ways to feel empowered. It allows you to recharge and recharge yourself. It’s highly underrated. If you don’t currently partake in some sort of self care, you must give it a try. What does self care look like?! It could be yoga, meditation, running, working out, a massage, a manicure, spending time with friends or a quiet time for reading. Whatever recharges you and makes you happy! Think of it as ‘me’ time and make it a priority!

4. Inspiring threads!

What you wear can help empower you to get sweaty + strong! Grab a cute shirt with a motivational phrase or something that you feel like a rockstar in. Pick up a new pair of yoga pants or put on your favorites that you already own. If you like what you wear when you workout, you definitely workout harder!

5. Friends who inspire!

I am so thankful that I have so many friends who inspire me + empower me to be the best version of me. I have met some of the most amazing people thru fitness and they never cease to amaze me. I have so many amazing people that I could feature here, but to keep it short, I’d like to spotlight Katie and Sarah.
Katie works so hard as a P.A. in labor and delivery doing things I could never dream of. Every day, she brings saves lives and new lives into the world.  She is one of my best friends, and is always there to listen. She grinds hard in the gym and at work & inspires me to keep going on some of my hardest days. img_4134

Sarah is an amazing mom who makes motherhood look easy. I look up to her so much and hope to be a mom like her someday. She is a pilates instructor, personal trainer and one of the sweetest girls I have ever met. She inspires me to work hard and never quit. Also – post baby body GOALS!! img_4046

Both these women inspire and empower me thru their love, support and friendship!

Disclaimer: This post was sponsored by AfterShokz in an effort to spread awareness about their new Pink Trekz headphones, in partnership with Bright Pink to support and spread awareness around breast cancer awareness. All opinions and words are my own. I truly appreciate all of the brands the support the Sweat Pink community.

Sugar Series: Pumpkin Spice Probs

October = pumpkins, right? (at least it does for most people in the USA)

Starting as early as August (it’s getting kinda ridiculous if you ask me haha), pumpkin spice flavored items start to pop up everywhere from Starbucks to Trader Joes. Pumpkin Spice really gets into full swing in mid-September and October.

Pumpkin-SpicePeople are in the “pumpkin spirit” because of Fall festivals, Halloween and visits to the pumpkin patch.

Don’t get  me wrong – I have nothing against pumpkin. I enjoy my share of pumpkin recipes and am capable of using “pumpkin pie spice” with a heavy hand this time of year. My thing with pumpkin spice “craze” is the products that are popping up and the amount of sugar and additives they have in them. What happened to natural pumpkin people?????

Check some of these out from a recent trip to the store:

Yes, pumpkin spice M&M’s – because they are candy, I don’t think I need to explain the sugar 🙂

not pumpkin flavored, but you get the idea….

sounds super yummy, but I am a firm believer that PB shouldn’t have sugar added to it.

If you really want to spice up your PB, take some fresh ground peanut butter and add pumpkin pie spice to it…. it’s pretty good 🙂

These are some other pumpkin products a lot of people are talking about & they all have tons-of-sugar!

no real pumpkin! you could make your own pumpkin butter with a little bit of pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice and/or cinnamon…. yum!

at least the milk has real pumpkin, but look at all the sugar in 1/2 cup! Too bad there isn’t an unsweetened version

hard to see, but there is real pumpkin in the ingredients & some added sugar too

Out of everything listed above,  the Chobani yogurt is probably the best option.  While it does have some added sugar, the pumpkin flavor is not artificial and the high protein benefits of greek yogurt is there. I still would rather make my own pumpkin flavored yogurt using pumpkin pie spice and pumpkin puree…

Let me be clear: I am not saying all these things are bad and you should never eat them. What I am trying to point out is that you should try to always eat whole, natural, unprocessed foods and pay attention to the amount of sugar in the products that you buy. Unfortunately a lot of the “seasonal” or “limited edition” products have added sugar and the taste presented in some of these products are something that you could recreate on your own to enjoy in a healthier way.

Here are some “pumpkin” items I bought to try this year:
Photo Sep 23You can still enjoy Fall and the pumpkin season, just pay attention to the items you choose and try to avoid sugar and lots of fake ingredients. Remember, everything in moderation. Focus on what you can have, not on what you can’t 🙂

Pumpkin comes in all forms, so I figured I’d include a few items that let you enjoy pumpkin in a new way:
